Male/Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia)

Male/Female Pattern Baldness, also known as Androgenic or Androgenetic Alopecia is related to androgens or male hormones, more specifically, testosterone). This hair loss affects men as well as women and accounts for 95% of all hair loss. Hair loss in men tends to occur at the front of the scalp, temples and vertex (top back). In women the entire scalp is at risk but generally affects the top half of the head.

In Androgenic Alopecia, an enzyme in the scalp (5-alpha reductase), converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone ,or (DHT). DHT binds to the hair follicle and causes deterioration including:

  • shrinkage of the hair follicle
  • limiting blood supply to the follicle
  • hairs become progressively thinner and finer, and do not grow as long
  • follicles produce less hair (normally follicles produce more then one hair)
  • follicles spend less time in the growing phase and more time in the resting phase

Eventually, the hairs become so fine and weak that they are no longer viable. The final stage of balding involves irreparable scarring of the follicle.

Studies have shown that scarring of the hair follicle can occur 30 months after the onset of hair loss. It is therefore important that treatment is started at the first signs of hair loss. Caught early enough, follicles can be rehabilitated before they are attacked and destroyed by the immune system.

Treatment for Androgenic Alopecia includes Low Level Light Therapy, and concurrent use of a DHT inhibitor product.
